The Evolving RunRio Trilogy in 2018

I was among the fortunate ones to have been around the first RUNRIO Trilogy in 2010. Races like these were not to be missed because 1) they form part of your tune-up races for marathons 2) they give you great competition from the best runners in the land and 3) they epitomized what a big race is yet give you personalized treatment. Of course a bonus treat was always, always getting a chance to see Coach Rio dela Cruz. Not only did he create RUNRIO Trilogy, he was the guy who started the Afroman-distance of 32K, hence became his monicker, the Afroman.

The spike in public interest for races resulted in more events, some less focussed on the athletics side and more bent on luring participants for the recreational side which is not at all too bad, except that someone had to keep the competition alive. Thus we ran witness to the evolution of the RUNRIO Trilogy — from the actual race routes, the size, design and quality of race uniforms and even content in lootbags and winner prizes. I think RUNRIO also pioneered in the so-called “united” or puzzle medals (3 medals that, when collected, will form one bigger medallion) and also tried to experiment on a super-sized “platito” medal in 2012-2014, when 42K marathon distance was already included in the loop.

2017 trilogy medals each looked good as stand-alone…but together, they volted i like magic!

trying on the 2018 RunRio Trilogy medals, may renaissance effect talaga!

Personally, I felt that last year was a renaissance of the athletic side of RUNRIO, that image and reputation of being premier in:

  • delivery of world-class routes and race execution
  • social responsibility by partnering with great advocacies
  • providing highest quality of running gears and medals
  • showing appreciation to customers and patrons with post-race awarding

And so, the question that begged to be asked: What’s in store for RUNRIO Trilogy in 2018? With a twinkle in the eye as if taunting, RUNRIO President and CEO Coach Rio quipped, ““This year promises to be exciting for us and for all those who want to join our runs…Running enthusiasts can look forward to the 2018 RUNRIO Trilogy not only as an avenue to push their limits but also to spend quality time with friends and family.”

Participants can also look forward to more exciting running activities in store for everyone. First is the 5k Family Run. For this race, teams must consist of two adults and two kids. Each kid must be 15 years or below to qualify. The 5k Barkada Run, on the other hand, is open to four adults each of whom must be 16 years of age or older. There is also the 10k Buddy Run which, is also for participants 16 years old and above.

As an added incentive for runners, participants who register in groups are entitled to a substantial discount on the registration fees.

But at the heart of RUNRIO TRILOGY will always be the pay-forward, post-race, culminating activities where super-achievers are honored and the fulfillment of raising funds are highlighted upstage.

Zero Waste Month and the 4th Eco-Waste Management Summit

Thirteen years of Ra 9003 and 4 years of Zero Waste Month is a partnership built to last; only because of continuing need to be environmentally responsible extends even beyond our lifetimes. Hence the 4th Eco -Waste Management Summit, with its theme “Strengthening Cooperation and Partnerships On Ecological Solid Waste Management for the Present and Future Generations”, will be held on January 25-27, 2018 at the ABC-CBN Vertis Tent, Quezon City.

As in the past, the event will be spearheaded by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Natural Resources (DENR). The department is tasked to further enhance public awareness and understanding of environmental issues and concerns and focus on practical know-how for effective solid waste management at  source (i.e., waste segregation, composting and recycling).

This year’s summit brings together a myriad of stakeholders all of which contribute to the teamwork required to create a future where citizens enjoy clean air and an environment secure from natural calamities. Nothing short of wanting to save the planet, the Pinoy edition, the summit presents an interactive program to inspire participants to spread the information and take action.

The 3-day event not just includes seminars and talks on current issues, legislation and innovations but participants will get treated to a a technological expo of products and services on eco-waste management.

exhib7
the bambike was a hit during the summit as it was used by EMB to start off the ceremony instead of the usual ribbon-cutting

Some highlights…

Quezon City was among the pioneers at enforcing eco-waste management reforms at the municipality level, hence, no less than Honorable Mayor Herbert Bautista, took the center stage and thanked the public-at-large for believing in a green QC.

HB

Keynote speaker, chairperson of Senate Committee on Environment & Natural Resources, Cynthia Villar pressed on with the importance of developing livelihood programs as well as INDIVIDUAL or personal stewardship as major factors in sustaining shared responsibilities across different levels of society.

villar

Speaking on behalf of DENR and the EMB, Secretary Roy Cimatu emphasized waging its war on ecological wastes particularly in our waters. But equally important is how eco-waste management must be addressed at the multi-sectoral levels hence the call out and acknowledgement to entities like the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) the Department of Health (DOH) and different LGUs and the DOH, for a few.

Long after the expo is realized, DENR’s Cimatu takes to heart and fruition its mission to not only raise more awareness but beef up efforts in solving the ever-increasing problems of garbage and pollution especially in urban areas.

We are called on then to take that shared accountability as law-abiding citizens and earthlings – an oath that we make to our children and children’s children – to work for zero waste management and save our future.

The OFW Home Run 2018 …atpb!

Truly, PEOPLE are the greatest assets of a nation, especially its pool of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers). No better way to honor and celebrate them than to always welcome them back to base, to be with their families and friends.

The Filipino Initiated Livelihood Organization Credit and Savings Cooperative (FILO COOP) and EVX Marketing invites you to take part in the biggest, and most anticipated event of the year, “The OFW Home Run”, to be held on March 17-18, 2018 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Open Grounds.

The actual fun run will be staged on Day 2 March 18  .  The race is expected to draw in more than 20,000 people from in and outside the OFW organizations and its industry, putting their stamina to the test in the 3k, 5k and 10k distance categories. The trade show will showcase the indigenous products of our OFW friends who decided to venture into business in the Philippines and other products as well as investment and franchising opportunity for OFW’s looking for our additional income stream in this time of the year where everybody is into giving and sharing.

Moreover, the job fair will help open opportunities of employment inside and outside the country with the cooperation of companies and agencies trusted by Department of Labor and Employment and its jurisdiction.

To make the event a festive experience for the attendees, an early summer mini -concert will be staged on March 17, Saturday evening, where our OFWs will be serenaded by artists from the entertainment industry.

The activity will also aim to foster and fund projects and programs for the reintegration program for our OFWs who lost their jobs and want to start anew in the Philippines by giving them livelihood programs and initial capital to start a small business.

Keeping the Tradition Alive: 2018 Family Stallion Run

It’s been ages since I last run a Stallion Run. Back in 2011, I recall having finished a 21K that saturated almost the roads of the Greenhills Shopping Center, took a U-turn at EDSA-Ortigas junction and attacked the lung-busting hills of San Juan. This 2011 edition was organized by the Xavier Batch 1986 to commemorate Xavier School’s 55th anniversary, and the Silver Jubilee of that batch. I made a mental note of the fact that the run was very well attended by its own student body and their families. I’m sure Xavier alumni also supported the event, gauging from the numerous sponsor logos on the tarps.

Initially called the Xavier School Runathon (Fun Run and Marathon), the project has since carried the name Xavier Family Stallion Run to date, and is held every Third Sunday of January.  The event continues to be a collaboration of the entire Xavier School Community with XSPA, AAXS and Xavier Batch 1986 taking the lead.  For the 2018 event, Xavier School Class 1994 has joined the organizing committee to provide more support and also gear-up for their Silver Jubilee in 2019.

The Family Stallion Run on January 21, 2018

The race is open to runners of all ages and running experience.  Prominent personalities will also grace the event as Stallion Run has become one of the most sought after events in the school calendar that puts a premium on Health and Fitness.  Expect to see a lot of Xavierians as the event will serve as a great venue for the students to bond with their parents, siblings, relatives, and friends.

For this year, you may choose among 4 categories – 1k, 3k, 5k, and 10k.  Through the years, the 1k category was included to encourage more participation from the Nursery/Kinder students, and the venue moved back to around Xavier School and Greenhills West for posterity’s sake.

Aside from the event shirt and a loot bag of freebies, participants also get a finisher’s medal upon crossing the finish line.  Get into competitive mode and be among the fastest and you get a winner-medal for bragging rights.

Gifting with Purpose: NOVUHAIR

It’s the season of the never-ending parties once again.

While this means trying to look your best at all times, this also translates to countless trips to the salon for perming and styling. Often times we hardly realize the damage to delicate strands caused by chemical contents of various products used on our hair — until it becomes lackluster and begins to fall out.

A situation that further complicates this vicious cycle is the heat and humidity brought about by extreme weather condition. Either way dries out the locks easily and makes it more fragile and again, more prone to breaking and falling out.

Because you are what you eat, the fate of your crowning glory is in the plate. Your diet must have the correct balance of vitamins and minerals to supply hair with all that it needs to become shiny and strong. So don’t overindulge, especially this time of the year when gastronomic feasts are spread almost everywhere you go. Be careful on what you take in, thinking that it’s also what you feed your ‘do.

Even stress can wear off the beauty and health of the tress. And that’s exactly what you should avoid this Yuletide season. Never put pressure on yourself just to please everyone. Stay confident by just taking it easy, letting your hair down and partying with great common sense.

Jason: The Warrior Inside an Autist

My eldest son Jason graduated AB English from TIP in 2015. Most families with special children patted me in the back and congratulated, saying. “You did well, Mommy, but this is it, this is where to draw the line..” They said it like a death sentence and perhaps they meant well; autists, even high-functioning ones are not well-known to be part of the working class.

jason 1
Jason with younger sibling Aimee and Me
Jason running his favorite 10k distance at Camp Aguinaldo QC

Frankly, I was at a loss for a while. Being in school for many years, there was a certain contentment and complacency that all parents like me thrive on, because it certainly gave a direction and purpose to our children’s extraordinary lives. My hubby once half-kidded me that we can keep Jason in school, one course after another, until our dying days. Back then, and even now, I’m not sure if we played that denial stage not so much because we didn’t exactly know what to do with Jason after college — or, if that we were just plain scared of what the world might NOT offer him.

Trusting my instincts and with the necessary support of Mona Veluz of ASP, we placed Jason on a soft program of developing and instilling both soft (socialization, communication, decision-making, problem-solving) and hard skills (detailed work, computer proficiency) for over a year, post-college. For the first time, Jason interfaced with fellow adult autists and I saw how inward-looking my son became even after 15 years of formal classroom education.

I still get weepy when I recall how much of a man he transformed right before my eyes. Yes, he took a little from our family life but he placed those emotional deposits into another “family” of fellow-autists and primary supporters who knew and encouraged that part of him yearning to break out. This was the WARRIOR inside that had been aching and fighting for release.

When the stint at SM Mezza Savemore came. my warrior was more than ready.  Except for a few adjustments here and there, Jason started making personal decisions on how he would be conducting his work, from the moment he woke up, commuted via LRT, walked almost 1 kilometer to and from our place everyday, the manner by which he would comply with tasks given to him, and most especially, what he would do with his salary.  I did not mind taking the backseat and taking his bull-headedness at times, after all, this was also teaching him life-skills more than anything else.

jason3
Thank you ASP, ILLC and SM SaveMore for this experience!
jason5
with friends and co-workers Brainard and Rhav!

I specifically remember that stormy day in late September that we got a text message from him – “SOS, LRT is closed. What to do?” Trying not to sound worried, I texted him back with a message that an Uber driver was on his way to get him. It didn’t take long for him to get home after that, but I ‘m still proud of that fact that my warrior had become less dependent on me and more dependent on his own man.

jason2
Jason and the ASP boys of Mona Veluz!

As sure as Jason is looking forward to more work experience, I will be happy to have him home more often in the meantime, being helpful at some chores and running errands. In fact, we know he will hit the roads and pick up his running more regularly now; all part of being the warrior that he will continue to be.

“See you again someday, SM Mezza Savemore

Autism is NOT a limitation; it is a beautiful beginning waiting to unfold!
