22nd AMACPh 2023: Age-defying Greatness

Getting sidelined due to age is relatable. Somehow there’s still that fire in you that aches for the adrenaline rush, the challenges of training and the need to be recognized for performance. Fortunately, for aging but former or retired national or world-renowned athletes, ex-national coaches, ex-members of varsity teams — the road to greatness will always have a time, place and moment!

The Philippines was recently commissioned to host the Asian Masters Athletics Championships 2023 event this coming November 8 to 12, 2023 at the New Clark City stadium in Capas, Tarlac. In the 22 years that the Asian Masters Athletics [AMA] Championships has been running in Asia, this will be the first time the event will be held in the Philippines. This prestigious event will be participated in by close to 2,000 amateur and senior athletes coming from over 20 countries.

Participants in this competition are comprised of retired and former amateur athletes, from age 35 to 100 years old, and are composed of former athletes who represented their respective counties in sports events around the world. Our Philippine Team members are former amateur athletes, who have represented and won in various international competitions worldwide.

The five-day competition is comprised of various track and field events of individual and relay running categories and disciplines, including sprints, hurdles, steeplechase, walking, high jump, long jump, triple jump, a 10-kilometer road race, as well as throwing events such as pole vault, shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, hammer throw.

For the groundwork here at home, we are fortunate to have the National Masters and Seniors Athletics Association of the Philippines [NMSAAP] led by former national athlete himself, NMSAAP President Jose “Jun” Ang and staunch supporter of sports for all age groups. His team of experts will include former Gintong Alay athletes, technical guidance from Race Director Neville Manaois and Race Mechanics and a host of sponsors and advocates to give our athletes the best experience at competitive sports.

Making the event more spectacular is OUR presence to boost the morale and cheer on our local competitors. Entrance to the New Clark City Stadium will be completely free. Click here on how get to the NCC Stadium from Manila.

For many of our elderly athletes, this could be the chance of a lifetime to earn that much-coveted “age-group” champion-medals. It might even pave the way towards being a Philippine representative to the World Athletics Championships in 2025, who knows?
